MAY AND MOTHER’S DAY
Last May, I wrote this as part of my May Blog and Mother’s Day:
Being a mother has been the most important and rewarding thing I have ever done. Has it been perfect? No, just ask my son. It’s definitely been a work in progress. I hope I’ve gained some wisdom with the years. Becoming a mother at 20 meant that we both grew up together. I still remember when I first saw Tim. I remind you that I had my son when there was a hospital nursery, mothers were rationed their babies during the day, and I was totally out during his birth from anesthesia. How times have changed! I looked forward to every moment I could hold him, be with him and counted all his fingers and toes. I was in the hospital for almost 5 days! That’s how long ago this was!
Tim has been my son, my teacher, my guide and now my friend in more ways than I can say. He’s always been level headed and focused. And now I get to see him with his own son. My heart is full. Joy oozes from me without measure. I’ve never known such bliss as having a grandson.
One year later and life is so amazingly loving and beautiful! To think that I thought I would never have a grandchild and now Teddy is 3 years old. We have the best time when I visit. Teddy gives the bear hugs and calls me Nana. Life is so wonderful with him in it and I can’t imagine him never being in my life.
May is about nurturing. Whether it’s about how our gardens and flowers are growing as we care for them or our families are growing up as we nurture their growth whether in the role of parent or grandparent or guardian.
You don’t have to be a mother to know the loving feeling of nurturing and helping young people grow and be a contributing part of a family or community. The role of caregiver, nurturer or mother comes in many forms and both sexes. The only word to describe it is love.
So, here’s to wishing you lots of love in whatever mothering role you play. May joy always be part of your journey with children from birth to adulthood. May your heart overflow with love and memories of family, no matter what family looks like. Here’s to celebrating Mothers that are no longer with us and those we can let know how much we care and love.
