Happy Fourth of July! A holiday to celebrate as you choose. The official name of this national holiday is Independence Day and I really love that word, independence. Independence, according to the dictionary, is:
the state or quality of being independent or freedom from the control, influence, support, aid, or the like of others.
History tells us that this is the day our country declared its independence from England. But, there’s an interesting element in this historical fact. Everyone that fought for independence from England already felt independent. That feeling and desire of independence created the actual event of the formation of our country. What a feat for the times! This small group of rag tag colonies actually fighting a world power to be free! Amazing!
So, let’s think about this notion of independence for a moment. The feeling of independence, just like the colonials, comes from the inside first and is expressed on the outside. No one can grant us independence if we don’t already feel it. Independence is your soul’s natural state according to Neale Donald Walsh. We’re born with it!
This holiday and every day of our lives is about freedom to be who we all choose to be. Freedom is another divine gift at birth. What we do with it is up to us. Nothing can deny it, constrict it, diminish it or prohibit it.
As we celebrate this holiday, I’m watching the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular on television. The event is on the banks of the Charles River and full of inspiring patriotic songs performed by stars and the Boston Pops orchestra culminating in spectacular fireworks.
· What makes you feel independent and free?
· How do you celebrate the day?
· Make your gratitude list in answer to the above questions.
Whatever your answers, whatever your political views, we live in the greatest country with so many things to appreciate because we ARE independent and free!
